the morning commute is going to look. mixture of wind and rain. look at the radar across northern california. in the mountains we are picking up some snow. this is the cold storm and we are expecting quite a bit of snow since travel plans this holiday weekend watch out. winter storm warnings up for a good part of northern california mountains and the sierra nevad nevada. temperatures right now mainly in the 50's. 49 in san jose. it's not going to be quite as cold as what it was this morning. rewe had frosty cold conditions. winds gusting to 25, 26 miles an hour. higher elevation 40 to 45 miles an hour. wet and windy for the morning commute. winter arrives at 3:12 in the morning. certainly going to feel like it and more rain coming up for the weekend. here's satellite and radar. slow moving storm which 80's we are just seeing the rain in the north bay right now but by morning that will all change. waves of rain for this upcoming weekend. it's cold so we will see quite a bit of snow out of these systems as we head that the weekend. 11:00 p.m. tonight we have the rain line in th

, also light. mainly--light. the satellite and radar showing northern california moisture this plume that continues to push that will continue to be responsible for the system tomorrow. there is a secondary system forming. the tail end of that will push for northern california. this will go towards sunday. as we look at futurecast spotty showers. hit or miss. not exactly where they will be but just keeping your umbrella and the would be a good idea and while that might be nice we could use that dry weather i do not think it is going to happen. it could continue. that will move in after midnight. heavy rainfall through 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. at the rainfall will stall over the north bay and concentrated. and pressing south of the golden gate. there is even a flawed watch in effect for the north bay, the san mateo, with a flood watch. because of thatfall totals near what we saw today with over 3 in. in the valleys. that is where the flood watch is in effect and the wind will be gusting. 60 m.p.h. the sierras, not much snowfall to is the highest elevations with about nine dozen feet. all

12 miles of northern california beaches is puzzling marine biologists. thousands of squid washed up during high tide yesterday along miles of the monterey bay shore. the humboldt squid stranded themselves from aptos to watsonville. some people tried to put them back in the bay but the deep water creatures swam back to shore. a graduate student observing it said this could probably -- said the squid probably don't know where they are. >> they don't see the shore very often so it might be they don't understand what's going on around them and they are trying to get away and don't realize if they swim towards the shore, they are going to run out of water eventually. >> researchers say that mass strandings are common when squid invade a new area, although seagulls and other critters are likely to gorgeous on the carcasses. scientists warn people not to touch or eat the squid as they may contain toxins. >>> if they were old enough, they would be booked into jail and charged with a measure 11 robbery 1 which would land them 90 months in prison. >> an unbelievable crime by a par of even mor

is the circulation. this will set up a pattern that will direct the storms closer to northern california. so we're talking about multiple storms. the first one set to move in, friday. the second one on saturday. another one as we head into sunday. accumulation is pretty impressive. could be approaching 7 inches in the north bay total -- coatal hills. around 2 to 3 around the bay itself and even approaching 5 inches around the santa cruz mountains. i clicked the button too fast here. but just to give you the perspective with the numbers. those are the forecast titles through the weekend. our rain will translate to some more mountains. in fact, significant snow. you can expect for delays and possibly clod closures -- road closures, as we head into friday, saturday and also into sunday. here is our forecast model showing you the chances of rain developing in the north bay between 3:00 and 0:00, slowly spreading to the south by 11:00 tonight. the south bay is still dry. a good portion of the bay area, that rainfall is still a factor. tomorrow morning we'll have wet roadways. the south bay is not pi

section of the northern california coast. kron 4's charles clifford has details >>reporter: earlier today in washington the president gave a green light to the national oceanic and atmospheric adminstration, or noaa, to come up with a plan for expanding two of northern california's marine sanctuaries. let's take a look at a google earth map. this is a view of san francisco looking north across the city. to the west, off the marin coast is the gulf of the farallones national marine sanctuary seen herer in green. it covers more than 1200 square miles of ocean and includes the farallon islands and the waters around point rays. to the north is the cordell bank national marine sanctuary which includes more than 500 square nautical miles. now, under the proposed expansion the cordell sanctuary would be more than doubled in size, as would the farallones sanctuary which would be extended north to point arena in mendocino county. if approved the expanded sanctuaries would include more than 50 miles of coastline and protect more than 4500 square miles of ocean. northern california representative ly

. this is approaching northern california bringing heavy rainfall through your regatta. it will press south, overnight. let us take a look at futurecast. through santa rosa, and by 3:00 a.m.-5:00 a.m., moderate through the north bay. the notice, this is more organized and the storm, today. moderate rainfall but by 9:00, it will be south of the golden gate with residual showers throughout the day. and a 11:00, continued all to the bay area. that will give the case until to and through the evening finally tapering off towards the later evening hours. quite a bit of rain fall through the sierras. and that went into effect with heavy snowfall expected. several feet of accumulated snowfall by monday. one-2 ft. to the higher elevations. taking a look at the futurecast notice the snowfall is ongoing. not much of a break. widespread snowfall and it will start to take off but the snowfall will kick back over for the afternoon. let us get a look a your extended forecast. a storm today, tomorrow and the good news is drier weather is expected for christmas eve and. the rainfall will remove fat and if possibly by

. the satellite and radar showing the core of the storm. it is surrounded by cold air. snowfall through northern california the snowfall totals will also be dropping. this will go towards a southern california. this yellow with the heavier rainfall finally pressing against the coast. and futurecast has been slow to bring it into the bay area. let us take a look. it has been offshore. and still keeping their rainfall offshore for the latter portion of that day by midnight. finally, some heavy rotation of midnight rain fall towards livermore, the delta, san jose we will continue to see showers south of the golden gate record c clearing for the north bay with more clearing. we could see more clearing. rainfall totals will be fairly light. with nearly 1 in. near the coast. and again of the snowfall levels are dropping. but most of the precipitation will be pressing her before that happens. the north bay hills, the east bay hills and electric your extended forecast. and tomorrow, dry conditions on the sunday with the increasing clouds. . just a slight chance of storms and returning on wednesday. >> .
